Cocoplum
Chrysobalanus icaco
Chrysobalanus icaco
2/3/22
Provides significant food and cover for wildlife. Their flowers attract butterflies, bees, beetles, and wasp pollinators and squirrels eat the fruit. While the fruits are too large for most birds, cardinals, grackles, jays and red-bellied woodpeckers eat them. They host a wide variety of insects that, in turn, provide food for insect-eating birds.
The cocoplum has been seen to treat ailments such as dysentery, diarrhea, diabetes, bladder problems and kidney issues. The fruit can also be turned into a jam.
It is also native to the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and West Africa.
▪︎Can grow up to 10-30 ft tall and 10-20 ft wide.
▪︎It takes about 12 months for a full hedge to grow.
▪︎The fruits are said to be very sweet.
▪︎The leaves of the cocoplum bush can come in various colors but this specific bush has red leaves.
▪︎The fruits grow in late spring through summer.
▪︎The Bush is located at the far entrance to the second building.
